Fine Arts Remodel

posted Oct 13, 2017, 11:36 AM by Scott Laird

The Athens campus remodel plan includes new space for fine arts.  The music department will move into space remodeled from part of the current library.  This moves them off the stage and allows for two soundproofed individual practice rooms, an office, as well as lockable musical instrument storage.  The stage gets a facelift also; with new stage curtains, acoustical treatments, stage floor and wall remodel, a lift for handicap accessibility, and upgrades to the lighting, sound, and video systems.  The goal of the stage remodel is to be able to host high school productions at the high school instead of using the Cantrall school.  When not in use by the fine arts department, portable folding bleachers on the stage could provide about 200 overflow seats for the main gym.

Classroom Remodel

This rendering shows a typical classroom in the Athens Junior and Senior High School after the remodeling is complete.  The remodel plan includes a new HVAC system with all spaces air conditioned.  Also included are new ceilings, new thermo pane windows, energy efficient lighting, technology updates, and new flooring.  All classrooms will be fully handicap accessible and have a fire sprinkler system.  The goal of the remodel is to create a comfortable and reliable physical plant that can last the district 20 to 30 more years.

Cafeteria Remodel

This is a rendering of what the newly remodeled cafeteria and media center could look like in the Athens campus remodel plan.  The plan utilizes the existing shop space and classrooms to create a new cafeteria with permanent seating for over 230 students.  This area is adjacent to the existing kitchen and connects to the new multi-purpose room (current cafeteria) through overhead doors to accommodate larger crowds.

The space will function as not only the cafeteria, but as a commons for before and after school use, and as the new media center (library).  We will have enhanced wireless internet connectivity, as well as permanent computer stations and printer availability for research projects.  Large video screens will be connected to the schools’ internal network and will also have the ability to play video from TV and other external sources.  The cafeteria seating will include both tables with chairs and diner style booths which will double as study areas for the media center.  The employee lunch area is located in the south east corner.

Athens School Board Approves Remodel Plan

posted Sep 5, 2017, 12:06 PM by Scott Laird

Last month the Athens CUSD #213 school board approved a preliminary plan to remodel and expand the Athens campus. The plan remodels buildings built from 1937 thru 1994 and touches every space on the main campus. Highlights of the plan include new HVAC systems, floors, lighting, ceilings, fire sprinklers and windows.

Spaces slated for new construction include locker rooms, entrance/office, vocational education shop and classrooms, and an expansion of the multi-purpose room into a gym. Financing this remodel would require voter approval of an extension of the current bond and interest levy. No increase in the tax rate is expected.
