3rd Grade Writing Performance Descriptors
1. Use prewriting strategies to choose a topic and generate ideas with teacher assistance.
2. Write fully-developed paragraphs using proper form (topic sentence, details, conclusion) and a variety of sentence types (interrogative, declarative, imperative, and exclamatory), using a variety of sentence structure.
3. Organize paragraphs wit a clear beginning, middle, and end appropriate to purpose, audience, and context.
4. Elaborate ideas through first level supporting details (facts, description, reasons, narration).
5. Develop multi-paragraph compositions that include an introduction, first and second level support, and a conclusion.
6. Introduce using adjectives and adverbs to enrich written language.
7. Demonstrate subjective/verb agreement.
8. Use appropriate capitalization and punctuation.
9. Use correct spelling of high frequency words and demonstrate progression from phonetic to conventional spelling of words.
10. Use basic transition words to connect ideas.
11. Revise and edit with teacher utilizing rubric.
12. Write creatively for a specified purpose and audience (short story, poetry, directions, song, letter).
