Emergency Closing of Schools

Athens C.U. District #213 is providing the following information on school cancellations or early dismissals of school due to weather and/or road conditions:

The major consideration determining the cancellation of school will be the concern for safety and welfare of students and staff. Hazardous road conditions, caused by drifting of snow, ice accumulation, or extreme fog, may result in the cancellation or early dismissal of school. Also, dangerous temperature conditions because of extreme cold or wind chill factors may cause school to be closed.

School Cancellations

The District will attempt to notify the media outlets listed below by 6:30 A.M. if school is to be canceled. This will occur after road conditions have been determined by actually driving bus routes in the District, consulting with road and law enforcement officials in the areas, and monitoring weather forecasts to assess developing conditions. Parents are encouraged to monitor radio/television broadcasting for cancellation information.

PARENTS AND STUDENTS SHOULD NOT ATTEMPT TO CALL THE SCHOOLS SINCE SCHOOL ACCESS TO PHONES IS NECESSARY.

Early Dismissals

Once school is in session, every attempt will be made to complete the entire school day and dismiss at the regular time. Often, road conditions may be better during a winter storm later in the day because road crews have had the opportunity to plow or salt roads in the District. Again, weather forecasts will be monitored closely. Also, the District recognizes the burdens placed upon families caused by early dismissals because often the parents are working and may experience difficulties in making arrangements for childcare during the school day. Parents are again encouraged to monitor radio/television broadcasting for early dismissal information. PARENTS SHOULD NOT ATTEMPT TO CALL THE SCHOOLS SINCE SCHOOL ACCESS TO PHONES IS NECESSARY.
